Column: What's going on in Munster & Ashton?

In recent weeks, I have tried to highlight some issues and events in certain parts of Rideau-Goulbourn. This week, I’ll turn my focus to the communities of Munster and Ashton.

Both Munster and Ashton are currently a part of the City of Ottawa’s Village Plan Review process. Consultations took place several months ago and the feedback was very productive allowing our planning staff to develop updated village plans for these communities. In the coming weeks, planning staff will be back to discuss these plans further with our communities.

Development
One of the hot topics for discussion was development around the villages. Both Munster and Ashton do have some lands nearby that could be used for potential development. Keeping in mind that no development is permitted within one kilometre of a village boundary, I’d like to hear some feedback from residents on what, if any, type of development you would like to see around your community. A local developer, Talos Homes, has recently made an acquisition of lands adjacent to Munster. Currently, there are no plans in place and several hurdles to jump should development be permitted. In meeting with the owner of Talos Homes, he expressed interest in community involvement from the outset of any development planning and I encourage you to contact me to discuss this and what you’d like to see going forward.

OC Transpo – Route 283
As a reminder, the Rural Express 283 route saw no changes in the Network Optimization strategy. However, there are some subtle improvements that should make for a better ride to and from work. In the mornings, stops will be limited to requests prior to arriving at Dominion, meaning non-Rural express riders can no longer flag down the bus. The last bus in the afternoon will be pushed back, departing Hurdman Station at 5:40pm, to ensure a connection with the O-Train at Bayview Station. In addition, the first afternoon bus in Richmond has been extended to Stittsville. This bus will pick up at South Carleton High School at 4:39pm and make a drop at Stittsville Main and Carp Road at 4:52pm.

Councillor For Hire
Next week, I’ll share with you my experience from my first job as a Camp Counsellor in North Gower. For now, look for updates in coming weeks as two of my stops in the future will be at Danby’s Pub in Munster and also at Saunders Farm. We are still working to schedule these dates but stay tuned.

Richmond Fair
I’m extremely excited for the Richmond Fair this year as it marks the first time I’ll be attending as your Councillor. As promised during last year’s election, each and every year I will be at the Fair all weekend in my booth. If you can’t find me at my booth, it means I’m either in the parade or in line at a concession stand for one of my kids. Celebrating its 167th year, the Richmond Fair goes from September 15-18! See you there!
