Column: Spend Canada Day in Rideau-Goulbourn!

Looking for something to do on Canada Day?  There are plenty of options throughout the day and I’d be more than happy to highlight some of them for you.  There are some great events in Rideau-Goulbourn and a couple events around the City that are worth highlighting as well.

Canada Day in the Gower

On July 1st, 2009, I moved into North Gower with my family.  That afternoon, I remember driving my big U-Haul along Fourth Line Road and having to stop at Church Street due to a parade.  My first thought was “Wow, what a welcoming community!”  I then realized the parade wasn’t for me at all and thus I experienced my very first Canada Day in the Gower.  This is always a great time with lots of activities for all ages. Here’s the schedule of events:

1:00pm Decorate your bike with symbols of Canada and come in your most festive Canada Day clothes and join us for a parade – leaving from Marlborough Public School

1:30-4:30 Opening Ceremony & Cake followed by inflatable rides, and games for all ages. Street hockey matches – bring your stick and some friends for a playoff

7:00pm Grab your lawn chairs and bug spray – visit with the neighbours and enjoy some Canadian Tunes

8:00pm Annual East vs. West Tug O’ War

Dusk Fireworks by our very own North Gower Firefighters

Saunders Farm

The Munster Community Association is sponsoring a Canada Day celebration at Saunders Farm in Munster.  Admission is $20 per family and if you have never brought the family out to the Farm, you have no idea what you are missing.  Saunders Farm is one of the most unique destinations in Rideau-Goulbourn with 11 A-maze-ing mazes, a Water Spray Zone, wagon rides, and more.  Visit to find out more.

Canada Day Birthday Party with Golf

Want to play a round of golf on Canada Day?  Bring Family and Friends to celebrate at the Canadian Golf & Country Club near Ashton. Enjoy an afternoon on the golf course with shared cart followed by a great chicken & rib dinner and then dance the evening away with the band Ambush.  Fireworks to follow!

11:00am-12:30pm Registration

1:00pm Golf

6:00pm Cocktails

7:00pm Dinner

8:30pm Ambush

Dusk Fireworks

Can't make it for golf?  You can still come for dinner and Ambush in the evening.  Visit for more information.

Mayor’s Canada Day Breakfast

The Mayor’s Annual Canada Day Celebration for Seniors runs from 8-11am at the Aberdeen Pavilion at the soon to be renovated Lansdowne Park.  The event is sold out but I do have a few tickets remaining as some were returned to me.  If you are interested in going, please email me at  There are only a few so please don’t wait long before calling.  I’ll be at the breakfast as well and I’d love to see you out there!

Canada Day on the Hill

This year’s Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill will be packed.  Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, better known as William & Kate, will be on the Hill from 12:00pm until 1:30pm to meet and greet what promises to be a massive crowd.  Some great Canadian bands will perform, such as Sam Roberts and Great Big Sea and you’ll be able to see Olympic medallists, Alexandre Despatie and Jennifer Heil as they will be hosting the afternoon.  The theme for the Noon Show is “Canada: A Proud Past and a Bright Future.”

I hope you enjoy your Canada Day weekend.  If you need any further information about these events or if you just want to chat about something, feel free to call me at 613-580-2491 or email me at
