Choosing our Future - Building a Sustainable National Capital Region

Want to see into the future? The City of Ottawa, City of Gatineau and National Capital Commission (NCC) are doing just that with Choosing Our Future - a joint planning initiative. Since 2008, they have been partnering with groups of all kinds, and seeking public input to understand how to create sustainable, resilient and liveable communities for future generations.

Choosing Our Future is about ensuring that Canada’s National Capital Region has the tools to succeed in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Rising to these challenges will require us to think and act differently about how our community will grow, prosper, and be sustainable. Choosing our Future is consulting not only on environmental concerns, but on the economic, social and cultural aspects of sustainability.

Twelve over-arching sustainability goals have already been established and these include the following goal for Food and Agriculture:
The local food system is sustainable and provides residents with healthy and affordable food.

Work is now underway to identify the best set of strategies that will support the region’s food and agricultural systems.  In fall 2011, a new Sustainability and Resiliency Plan for Canada’s Capital Region will be created to provide the partners with a clear line-of-sight between long-term sustainability goals and near-term decision making.

The rural perspective is important to Choosing our Future and we invite you to learn more and get involved. From June to November there are many activities taking place. You can visit the Choosing our Future website to find out how!
