Column: Budget 2012 & Working at Danby's Pub

Budget 2012 - Public Consultations Begin Soon
City Council will table the 2012 Budget this week and we’ll immediately begin public consultations. Consultations will be set up next week with four around the City, the closest being in Riverside South at the Rideauview Community Centre on November 3 from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. Other locations are at Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans on November 1st, Holy Trinity Catholic School in Kanata on November 2nd, and at City Hall from 4-6pm on November 4th. I will likely be available in Kanata, Riverside South and City Hall to discuss Budget 2012. I’ll have more information on the budget in the coming weeks.

Councillor For Hire - Danby's Pub in Munster
Friday, October 14th was yet another adventure in my Councillor For Hire initiative. As a former bartender and server, I got to go back to my roots and work at Danby’s Pub in Munster. Danby’s first opened its doors in 2007 and has quickly become a great place to eat, drink, and have an all-around great time. It’s pretty clear that it doesn’t just serve Munster but patrons come from Richmond, Stittsville, and throughout Goulbourn and Beckwith to enjoy the atmosphere at Danby’s.

I was invited to work by owner, Debbie Mallett, and she quickly put me to work as a bus boy. One of my strengths as a bartender was that I really enjoy talking and, as many of you may know, I talk a lot. It turns out that trait doesn’t suit a bus boy too well. All I had to do was clear tables and, according to two of the servers, I failed miserably. Instead of clearing the table, I stopped and chatted with each table for about 5-10 minutes. At the same time, though, I think that’s why I was there. Deb put up signs throughout Munster announcing that I’d be working at the Pub from 5:30 to 9 on Friday evening. There was a great crowd as nearly every table was full for most of the evening. Even with the poor reviews from the servers, I had a great time clearing tables and chatting with patrons.

If you’ve ever been to Danby’s, you know how great this place is. If you haven’t, I would recommend that you get there as soon as possible. Danby’s has been awarded several Readers’ Choice Awards out of Stittsville, an impressive feat for a restaurant not actually located in Stittsville. Awards include Best Burger, Best Sports Bar, Best Family Restaurant, Best Patio, Best Live Entertainment, and Best All-Around Restaurant. All of the comments I heard last Friday emphasize the validity of these awards. One table stated that they had the best pizza ever and that they would now be ruined for all future pizzas not made at Danby’s. That’s one of the unique things about Danby’s as well. Not only are they an eat-in restaurant and pub, but they also have take-out pizza which is incredibly popular. To finish my night, I had a delicious pulled pork sandwich which, in my opinion, is a must have on their menu.

To sum up, it was a great time and a pleasure to be an employee at Danby’s for the night. If you want to learn more about Danby’s, check out their website www.danbys.ca. They are located at 2858 Munster Road in the beautifully quaint village of Munster.

My next Councillor For Hire job is in Munster as well as I venture out to Saunders Farm where I will be disguised as a character on Friday, October 28. Come out and see if you can tell who I am!

Upcoming Craft Shows & Bazaars
There is always a very easy way to tell that Christmas is coming: craft shows, craft shows, and more craft shows! On November 5, the Alfred Taylor Centre in North Gower is playing host to a craft show in addition to Richmond Public School, who will be hosting their 1st Annual Crafters’ Fair from 10-3pm. On November 12, there is the Christmas Bazaar & Bake Sale for the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind from 9-2pm at 4120 Rideau Valley Drive. The North Gower Farmers Market will make it triumphant return on December 3rd for their annual Christmas Market as well. Needless to say, there are plenty of options this time of year.

Electronics Recycling
Got E-Waste? Come out and support Osgoode Public School Parent Council, in partnership with Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) who will host a public event on Saturday, November 5th 2011 to collect and recycle unwanted electronic waste such as computers and accessories, MP3 players, cameras, telephones, TVs, VCR & DVD players and recorders, radios, and more. A complete list of accepted items can be found at recycleyourelectronics.ca
