5th Annual Manotick Soapbox Derby and BBQ Picnic in the Park
Sunday, August 30, 2015
Come out and celebrate the end-of-summer with a wonderful day for the entire family. It all happens at Centennial Park, next to the Manotick arena, with the soapbox racecourse on the Beaverwood Road hill. There will be races, music, a craft table for children, face painting, balloon figures from Dr. Kaboom, and of course, a BBQ lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers to purchase and fresh FREE corn on the cob. Bring a picnic blanket or chairs and spend some relaxing in the park. It’s not just a day for racing, but also a day for families to come out and enjoy the festivities.
Why not make the derby car a summer project? You must be at least seven years of age to race. You can purchase a kit on-line, or make one from items found around the house. There are certain specifications to follow and they can be found here. We also have carts available, that have been sponsored by associations and businesses in the community, for those youth who would like to race a cart, but don’t have one. We have 14 available slots for riders in these 7 sponsored carts. Each rider will be able to race two times that day.
There will be a variety of trophies awarded, from speed, to most creative, humorous, colourful, best costumed driver and patriotic. Please see the judging sheet for criteria. See you on the hill!
Summertime is here in the village of Manotick and that means it is time to celebrate with fresh, local strawberries, light refreshments, and jazzy live music!
Come join us here at Watson’s Mill on June 28 for our Annual Strawberry Social and you’ll be sure to have a grand time eating our delicious strawberry shortcake and enjoying the live entertainment provided by the Swamp Water Jazz Band. The Strawberry Social will be held on Sunday June 28 from 1 pm to 3 pm.
This classic event is one you do not want to miss. Come on out to eat, socialize, and enjoy the summer, and what better place to do this than at Watson’s Mill! Watson’s Mill is a unique 1860’s grist and flour mill located in Manotick, on the shores of the Rideau River. A working industrial heritage site in greater Ottawa, it has a remarkable history linked to local politics, the building of a country, and a tragic love story.
The WMMI mandate is to preserve Watson’s Mill as a working historic grist and flour mill, and a social, cultural and educational focal point for the community and visitors. The Mill is located at 5525 Dickinson Street, Historic Dickinson Square in Manotick. The Used Book Sale is open daily 10 am to 4 pm. There is free parking on-site. Join our E-List for regular news updates and volunteer opportunities: firstname.lastname@example.org. New members and tour groups are welcome.
This Friday, we'll be playing the popular Minute to Win It game. After that, there will be time for hanging out with the other youth or joining in a conversation about looking for a job. If you're between the ages of 12 and 16 years, then come out and bring a friend or meet some new ones. YOMA weekly Friday night drop-in information can be found at www.yoma.ca or on Facebook at Youth of Manotiock Association - YOMA.
The new Manotick branch of the RBC will be donating $1 to YOMA for every Cirque du Soleil ballot they give out during the month of May. Please ask for a ballot and help support our local youth. You can also support YOMA at the RBC branch opening celebration on May 30th.
